What?
In 2017, following my masters' graduation, I founded a company for motorcycle racing in Tanzania called “Moto Club.” The aim was to build professional motorcycle riders and provide employment for youngsters who ride Motorcycle as Taxis in Tanzania. Most meetings I had with Motorcycle Riders were engulfed with complaints on how unfairly they were treated by the police forces. The Motorcycle Riders of Dar Es Salaam have an organization called Chama Cha Madereva Pikipiki Dar Es Salaam (CMPD), charged with addressing the challenges of their people. However, the leaders in the organizational fall short of leadership skills which could help address these issues. I decided that my company come up with a plan to accommodate their complaints and provide a stage to address them. I used an organizational platform that already existed for CMPD and through their available database to reach out to their constituents. I met with the District Commissioner (DC) of Kinondoni who prompted me into writing him a formal invitation letter to take part as a guest of honor for Motorcycle racing. Since DC is in charge of security for the District, it was imperative that the Commissioner of Police force to join him.
So what I would do if I was
asked to train the CMPD leaders so they can sufficiently address the needs of
their people as I demonstrated above? I would focus on Three-Skill Approach explained
in a book Theory and Practice-Eighth Edition by Leadership Northhouse. Starting
with technical skills, I would train
them on how to utilize available database for communication proposes; human skills, I would teach them how to
work with one another, to be relational, and how to create conducive environment
for building trust; and last, conceptual
skills, I would show them how to use creative ideas for problem-solving. These
Three-Skills Approach are the vital components for building one’s strength in
leadership.
Moving forward, the Motorcycle Racing Day was successful for those key stakeholders who attended, including, the District Commissioner (DC) of Kinondoni, Commissioner of Police (CP), Kinondoni District, Motorcycle Riders of Dar Es Salaam and the sponsors for the event. The DC made firm remarks to denounce police brutality against Motorcycle riders and vowed to punish the perpetrators. My role as a facilitator was to bring people together for constructive conversations.
So What?
Now
What?
The overall
structure of the CMPD is relatively strong because it embodies the traditional
hierarchical leadership structure. However, a strong organizational structure
without leaders equipped with fairly good leadership skills is nothing. I
cannot by any counts claim that the three-skill Approach can solves all the
problems the CMPD faces, but I can assure that these could be one of the steps
toward strengthening their organization.
